Ilsa Monteiro – Retrospective of an innovative Brazilian Artist

Contemporary Art in Brazil #3

It is always interesting to see how innovation and ideas are born simoultaneously around the world or influence each other accross oceans. The retrospective of Brazilian artist Ilsa Monteiro is an illustration of this process. Retrospective at Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul Ado Malagoli.

Her work has not followed a linear progression as for most artists, so here I will just share 2 phases of her work.

The first one is her work around optical illusion and surface through those works made in the seventies:

The second phase is darker and occured in the eighties. The subjects painted are cadavers, bones interprated as surreaslistic fossiles. I just love the colors she uses to metamorphose those themes.
